In the XI-XIII centuries the monasteries experienced a bigger freedom from the interference of the dioceses and were able to benefit from the exemption to interact with the local dominant classes. This new dynamic in relationships had an impact on the transformations of both the ecclesiastical structures and the political and economic assets in the territory. The authors analyse the phenomenon from different points of view, always paying attention to the sources and addressing topics such as: the interventions of the papacy in order to influence the constitutional configuration of Orders and congregations; the forms of the documents issued for this purpose by the pontifical chancery; the intricate relations between the papacy, bishops and exempt monasteries; the relationships between the latter and local societies.

This is the second of two volumes examining some "original features" of late medieval Italy compared to the european reality of the time (the first volume of this collection was edited by Francesco Salvestrini). On this subject, two conferences have been held, whose proceedings have been published. The first conference, held in October 2000, tried to offer an account, in an introductory section, of the long-term environmental frameworks within which the path of Italian society is inscribed: the rural landscape and the framework of urban settlements, without forgetting, in one and in the another case, the legacy of the Roman world. The second conference, on the other hand - held in the autumn of 2002 - aimed to consider aspects of the history of culture and political ideologies, mentality, religious life, but also the history of techniques.

Golden crowns, precious relics or rare gifts - it is such treasures that we paradigmatically associate with the Middle Ages, while we think of the Modern Age as the beginning of consumer culture and collections. The lordship of the Beccaria, a branch of the great family from Pavia, on Arena Po, was established at the end of the thirteenth century, taking advantage of both the financial difficulties of the small municipality and the power of the family in Pavia. It was meant to last for centuries. Managed in a consortium form by various Beccaria exponents, it encountered difficulties also in relation to the political events of the duchy. Various documents are examined to investigate the nature, modalities and reality of the relations between the lords and the land in the final centuries of the Middle Ages, especially from the fiscal, economic and agricultural point of view.

Charles I of Anjou restored the counties according to the Norman system; his successors im- proved them and let them become a space of local power inside the the Royal districts, the gi- ustizierati. At the same time some aristocratic families consolidated themselves, like the Ruffo of Calabria, lords of Sinopoli, who obtained the comital title in 1334. The paper analyses two important records: the cartulario 1 and the cartulario 17, integrating them with all the availa- ble documents. The cartulario 17 contains platea dating from 1335, which includes one or two older texts written in Greek and translated into Latin. It is at the same time an inventory and a municipal statute. The cartulario 17 is the main source for studying the creation, composition and ruling of the county of Sinopoli, not to mention the various world of the subjects to the lords, according to their status (vassallus) or their possessions as freemen (burgenses). We have also suffeudatarii and other people depending on the baron, like the raccomandati.
